Dear mother August.21.1914 I know it has been a couple of days since I last wrote to you and the family, but it has been crazy. Over half the men in my station haven’t slept for a while, because we’re not used to the trenches yet. And in the trenches it’s so muddy, and there are rats everywhere. Some even as big as cats, but you don’t have to worry about the ones on the farm ever getting that big, there only big like that because there feeding of the dead soldiers its quite disgusting. But luckily none of the men in my station have lice so we don’t have them yet and apparently there pretty bad too, because they lay eggs in your skin, and there very hard to get rid of.
It’s so difficult here because of all the horrible things we have to do and see. When your with a bunch of other guys that know what you’re going though it somewhat helps, but it’s horrible to have made a friend and then see him dead two minutes later. And that the fact is you can’t go back for him, which happened to my pal George we met and started training together it was like we had been friends forever. he was such a great man he had a wife but no children he really wanted them and always would talk about having his very own son, and I think that’s why me and him bonded he’s was like a father to me and I was like the son he never had. We always would share our favourite meal and that we couldn’t wait to go home and eat a nice home cooked meal or eat something other then what we usually get. Except for George he’s not going to ever have his favourite meal again. Yesterday George and I were running back to our station and he got hit with mustard gas he didn’t have time to put on his gas mask like me. It was terrible, something I never want to see a friend go though again, but its war right nothing I can really do about it.
