Students Name: Johnny Country of Origin: Republic of Haiti Primary Language Spoken: French-Creole Student's Home Connection Johnny's parents do not speak any english and are only able to communicate with the school through use of a para to translate. Dad works in a kitchen and mom stays at home. There are three younger brothers at home. "Johnny often jokes that he speaks Spansih, but he does not. I think he is trying to fit into the rest of the class" Mrs. Pearson Students School Connection Johnny attends Garner Elementary School located in downtown Winter Haven, Fl. Garner is a Title 1 school and has not made AYP's for three years straight. Seven out of 8 Spanish speaking students are proficiet in English, but parents are not. One of her Spanish speakers speaks little to no English. Resources: Mrs. Pearson has an ELL para that comes to her class 30 -40 min., 3 times a week. They work on English skills, Reading, phonics and overall understanding of classroom activities. Students also work together in buddy groups to do work without para.
