Physics of Sharpened skates vs Non-sharpened
Conclusion
The reason that it took me a lot longer to skate around the rink with non-sharpened skates then with sharpened skates is because it causes a lot more friction, and doesn't let you glide as easily or nicely. When you get your skates sharpened, it takes away an rigid edges, and makes the blades even, smooth, and sharp. When your skating with a non-sharpened pair of skates, there is a lot more friction between the blades of your skates and the ice, which slows you down. Not only that but, when your skates are dole they can have rigids in them, which causes players to “catch an edge.” This causes them to loose their balance, while the edge is slowing them down. When your skates are dole, you can not carve corners as easily either.
