Physics of Sharpened Skates Vs. Non-sharpened skates.
Data
To peform an experiment of sharpened skates vs. non-sharpened skates, you would need two pairs of skates. One pair has to be completely dull, and one has to be just sharpened. the way to tell if a pair of skates is sharp or not, you have to take your finger nail and run it down a very small edge of the blade. If a layer of your finger nail is taken off, then the blade is sharp, if not then it is dull. I used my new pair of ice hockey skates, and my old pair. My new ones were freshly sharpened, and my old ones were completely dole. My experiment was to see which skate helps you get once around the rink faster. First i used my dull skates, and stood in the corner at the goal line. One lap around would be to start at the goal line, and meet back at the same corner goal line that you started at. The rink is 200 feet by 85 feet and a radius of 28 feet. I did this experiment 5 times to get the times of 41 sec., 43 sec., 42.5 sec., 41.5 sec., and 45 sec. The average time for me to skate one lap around the rink wearing un-sharpened skates is 42.6 seconds. Then I performed this experiment with the pair of sharpened skates 5 times at the same speed, and started at the same spot. The results were 37 sec., 35 sec., 39 sec., 36 sec., and 36 sec. The average time for me to skate one lap around an ice rink is 36.6 seconds.
In conclusion my average speed with dull skates is 4.13 feet per sec. My average speed with sharpened skates is 4.8 feet per sec.
