The Goals of Prgessessives: 1.Protecting Social Welfare in order to improve society. 2.Promoting Moral Improvement by prohibiting alchol. 3.Creating Economic Reform by questioning the capitalist economic system. 4.Fostering Effiency by using time and motion studies to improve effiency by breaking manufaturing tasks into simpler parts.
Reforming Government: Local - Set up work relief for unemployed, built schools, parks, and a municlipal lighting plant, Pingree instituted a fairer tax. State - LaFollete regulated big busines, worked to end child labor, Keating-Owen Act. National - 17th amendment, provides election of US senetors by the people,
Trustbusting: Trust controlled 4/5 of industries. President ordered Justice Dept. to sue the Northern Securities Company.
Square Deal: used to describe various prgessive reforms sponsored by Roosevelt Administration. Roosevelt saw presidency as a bully pulpit in which he could influence the news media and shape legislation.
Republican/Democrat/Bull Moose Parties: Republicans were made up of Conservationist and Progessors. Democrats were made up of liberals , Bull Moose Parties wes the Progessive Party.
Civil Rights: Teddy Roosevelt supported some African American Individuals, but not in general. Woodrow Wilson supported Civil Rights.
Women Suffrage: NACW- managed nurseries, reading rooms, and kindergartens. The Leader: SUSAN B. ANTHONY
Strike Breakingg: Coal Minors went on strike, causing the coal reserves cold. President treatened to take over mines, there was arbration. When a strike threatened the public welfare, the federal government was ecxpected to intervene.
Taxinggg!: Underwood Act - reduced tariff rates for the first time since the Civil War. 16th Amendment legalized a graduated federal income tax. Federal Reserve Syste,m - system still serves as the baises of the nations banking system.
Conservationist: Roosevelt set aside 1.5 million acres of water power sites. Est. 50+ Wildlife Sanctuaries and National Parks. Taft was not a conservationist.
