Submarines of The Great War
The first Royal Navy submarine was developed by John P. Holland and was launched in 1902.
Although submarines were slow, fragile and able to dive for only a couple of hours at a time, with torpedoes they posed a serious threat to other ships.
The size of the crew numbered between 20 to 40 people.
Submarines were first widely used in World War I. The word submarine was originally an adjective meaning ''under the sea''.
The submarines could carry 700 tons of cargo
The standard submarine of World War I measured slightly over 200 feet in length.
