Bioaccumulation is the sum of two processes: bioconcentration and biomagnification. Bioaccumulation is used to describe the increase in concentration of a substance in an organism over time. Many synthetic contaminants are more soluble in fat than in water. Bioaccumulative substances tend to be fat soluble and not to be broken down by the organism.
