In 1948, the company purchased a second vessel, the"West Vancouver #6", and renamed her the"Uchuck II". This allowed for seperate schedules to Bamfield & Ucluelet
With the opening of the West Coast via a new Highway in December 1959, Uchuck traffic dropped off dramatically. It was decided to move the company to its current location in Nootka Sound.
In 1955, a retro-fitted Yard Minesweeper (YMS 123) renamed the "Uchuck III" was put into service and took over the Uclulet run, while the Uchuck II took over the Bamfield run. The Uchuck I was laid up and later sold off.
Barkley Sound Transportation Company
The Uchuck I was built in 1941, and by 1946 was leaving Port Alberni 3 days per week with stops in Franklin River, Kildonan, Bamfield, & Ucluelet.
In February 1946, Essen Young & George McCandless bought the original "Uchuck" and its existing West Coast shipping service from Richard Porritt and formed the Barkley Sound Transportation Co.
