The plates consist of an outer layer of the Earth, the lithosphere, which is cool enough to behave as a more or less rigid shell. Occasionally the hot asthenosphere of the Earth finds a weak place in the lithosphere to rise buoyantly as a plume, or hotspot.
Transform-Fault Boundaries: are where two plates are sliding horizontally past one another.
Divergent Boundaries: At divergent boundaries new crust is created as wo or more plates pull away from each other. Convergent Boundaries: Here crust is destroyed and recycled back into the interior of the Earth as one plate dives under another.
