Both the French and the British had become a problem for America. The French were seizing American ships and the British had never left U.S. soil. Meanwhile, the Native Americans began to unite. They didn't like the fact that our nation was expanding westward and they didn’t appreciate the customs that we introduced to them. The Native Americans sided with Britain. War Hawks, who believed strongly in nationalism, told James Madison (the current president) to declare war against Britain. Madison said the war against Britain was inevitable and soon declared war.
The Star Spangled Banner was written by Francis Scott Key while he watched bombs explode over Fort McHenry on the night of September 13th in 1814. When it all stopped in the morning, Francis saw the American flag still flying in the air and was so moved by it that he wrote a poem that later became our national anthem in 1931.
A British general, Sir George Prevost, brought his troops to capture an important city near Lake Champlain, Plattsburgh. American ships stopped the invasion when they defeated the British. Quickly fleeing from the lake in September of 1814, they went to Canada and decided that the war with America was a waste of money. The Americans and the British signed a peace treaty in December of 1814 in Ghent, Belgium. It is known as the Treaty of Ghent. It didn’t change any borders. There was one last battle in New Orleans because the news of the peace treaty hadn’t gotten to America. This battle was on January 8, 1815. It was known as the Battle of New Orleans. The British didn’t stand a chance against the American soldiers, who got the victory. Their leader, Andrew Jackson, became a hero and was elected as president in 1828. yourself
Unfortunately, we quickly realized how un-ready America was for war. The nation's army was very small and the state militias had no proper training. Most states opposed the war. We tried to take Lake Erie from the British, but failed twice, but finally seized the lake. The Native American's leader, Tecumseh was killed in the Battle of Thames when the American troops cut them off. Privateers attacked British ships, which captured many vessels. In 1814, Andrew Jackson attacked the Creeks and killed more than 550 of the Creek people. It was known as the Battle of Horseshoe Bend and it gave most of the Creek's land to America. The British over powered the American militia and set the nation's capitol on fire. Despite the thoughts of Americans, the British didn't take control of Washington DC and soon left the city and headed for Baltimore, who was waiting for their arrival. The British attacked in September but didn’t enter the town by the strong American defense from Fort McHenry.
