Dave Watt
1940-Present
-Dave was born in London during the London Blitz (a German bombing of London in 1940) A direct hit, hit his home which caused him and his mother to be evacuated to the wilds of the Devon/Dorset Border of South West England. -He was introduced to the local wild inhabitants at an early age and training as a forester with special wildlife management duties seemed an obvious profession. -After working with the Forestry Commission he decided to travel and arrived in Tasmania. -Opportunities offered by the Tasmanian environment caused Dave to become a professional photographer. -He was the first person to photograph the highly endangered Orange-Bellied Parrot. -He wrote eleven books, a few are Australia's Spectacular Wildlife Field Guide to Tasmanian Birds And Tasmanian Mammals, a Field Guide -Dave’s photos have appeared on greetings, post cards, calendars, diaries, tee-shirts, and frequently in advertising. -He has been featured in many magazines including: National Geographic, BBC Wildlife, Australian Geographic, Airone, and Nature Australia.
Mostly Dave likes taking wildlife photos. Some animals he has taken pictures of are: Thylacine (historical animal) This is a Tasmanian Tiger/Wolf. (Tiger Wolf mix) Song Thrushes Golden Headed Lion Tamarinds Bilbies (endangered) Cotton Top Tamarinds (endangered) Gelda Baboon (endangered) Northern Hairy-Nosed Wombat (endangered) Platypus’ Kangaroos Tasmanian Devils Quolls (mouse like creature Enchidnas (Porcupine-like) Pygmy Possum Wombats Wallabies Crocodiles Wolverines Tigers Grizzlies Wolves Cougars
He uses various forms of hide to catch the shot he wants. He once spent three days in a hide, 90 ft high in a Eucalypt Tree to obtain images of a White Bellied Sea-Eagle feeding it’s baby.
Outside of photography he is likely to be found: -Picking bilberries -Wilderness skiing -Or watching endangered Southern Right whales.
