At the end of this lab, my class concluded that all living things are made of DNA, as well as the fact that DNA wise, humans and strawberries aren't that different.
DNA: What it is. . . DNA is in all living things, it is what makes you up. Your DNA is kind of like the instruction booklet to your body, and it dictates who you are. All living things are made of the same DNA parts and proteins. So in a long chain, all living thins are similar, yet diferent! Beyond that, most genes are inheretid from parents. While all genes are inheretid, you still are unique though, as all living things are! In school, my class learned how to extract DNA from yourself painlessly, and also from a strawberries. Read on to find out how we did it!
DNA & Genetics
To get human DNA: My class put salt water into our mouths and swished it for about 3 minutes. Next thing we did was spit out the water into a test tube and added a few teaspoons of soap detergent. Next we added some alcohol, and observed. We could see the DNA floating up from the water into the alcohol!
To get Strawberry DNA: We mashed up one full strawberry (minus the green stem), then added salt and detergent to it. We then filtered our new concoction, and put the liquid into a test tube. Finally we added some ethanol alcohol to the concoction. After waiting a minute or so, we could see the DNA floating in the alcohol. While there was a lot more then in the other test tube, it was nearly identical to the human DNA!!
