Henry Ford left his family in Michigan to make something of himself. He soon became a mechanic and fell in love with the automobile, and later built himself his own car. He soon realized that automobiles were very expensive and not everybody could afford them, so he set out to make a smaller, lighter, and less expensive car.
Ford the founded the Ford Motor Company, were he could build the inexpensive cars. As many companies laught at Ford, he was determined to build the car. With his new company Ford started to produce the inexpensive Model T, which was priced under $1000 dollars which alm,ost anyone could afford.
The population of automobiles shot up going from only 4 registered cars in 1895 to 8.5 million registered cars in 1920, and later in 1927 that number nearly doubled!
After the Model T Ford needed a faster way to make cars, and soon thought up the assembly line: the usual 5,000 parts that would make up a car would go along a moving belt with various employees in different sections to perform specific tasks.
The automobiles relative, the bus, brought people together. In 1926 27,000 school buses came about which would replace the usual one-room school.
The school bus was vital in raising education between 1924 and 1929, the highschool attendence tripled in that half of the people that were of highschool age were enrolled.
As the car became increasingly popular people started to drive for pleasure; as a Sunday drive would take the place of church. Business owners also took pleasure drives on Sundays as a way to pass the time for their closed stores.
Driving vacations were very popular, and visits to national parks and historic venues increased dramatically. While people were on vacation, hotels were needed to harbor travelers with abundant parking close to the rooms, at what is now called a "motel".
Couples used the automobile to get away from parental supervision. Parents and teens would sometimes be divided due to fights over who gets to use to the car.
