Wolves by R.D. Lawrence
The grey or timber wolf has 27 subspecies. The arctic wolf is included in those. The subspecies may vary in weight, color, and/or size. They are also an endangered species. The red wolf is a very endangered species of wolf and very rarely are found in the wild because most of them are held captive.
According to biologists, wolves and dogs have poor frontal vision and superb peripheral vision. That means that although the wolf's eyes cannot recognize faraway things but the edges of their eyes can notice far-off movement even though they might not be able to know what is making the movement. They can immeadietly notice a movement ways off, even if its as small as a moose flicking its ears. They also have marvolous hearing and scent. They can pick up the scent of even the faintest scent an animal miles away.
Wolves' preferred prey consists of hooved animals such as musk oxen, deer, moose, and caribou. Sometimes they will also hunt beavers, rabbits, hares, and small rodents.
Wolves signal each other with there bodies, tails, fur, and voices. If a low-ranking member apporaches a higher-ranking member, it raises its tail. in respect. If the wolf that is signaling is aggressive, it will hold its tail very high and its fur raises, making the aggressive wolf look bigger than its original size. At the same time, the wolf arches its back and stiffens its legs, so that when the wolf walks, its like he or she is walking on stilts. The wolf that the aggression is going towards usually will signal that ithe wolf doesn't want to fight by lying on the ground, tail between its legs, head back, exposing the throat, and lift the back leg so it is not resting on the ground.
Wolves live in packs. Some packs may have as many as twenty members while other might have two or three. The pack is similar to a traditional human family. There is a dad, or Alpha male, and a mom, or and Alpha female. There is also aunts and uncles and new generation brothers and sisters.
Wolves howl for various reasons. Sometimes they howl merely bacause they are jofyful. At other times they howl to keep in touch with other pack members or they howl to keep their neighbor packs out of their teritory. They also howl before they hunt possibly because they are excited for the thrill of the chase.
A wolf that might decide to live one's pack might howl to announce its desicion. When the wolf is considered a ''lone wolf'' they howl to find another pack.
Wolf pups that are too young to eat raw meat but too old for their mother's milk all the time, get their food from the adults. After the adults come back from a hunt, the pups greet them and hungrily put their snout on a certain place on the adults mount and that signals the older wolf to regurgitate.
Wolves seem to express their moods and feelings, just like humans. A wolf with its mouth half open and its eyes shining slightly is definitly indicating its happy. When wolf pups play-fight with each other, it might seem as if they are silently laughping because their lips are pulled back, the corners slighly curving up, and their muzzles are not wrinkled. Also the tips of their fangs are showing only while in and angry expression, their snouts would be wrinkled and their fangs would be showing completely.
Wolves are predators, whcih means they are animals who catch other animals for food. Some wolf packs might preffer one type of an animal over another. The ''preffered prey'' is probably developed because it might have been the kind of animal they have enjoyed since they were pups. The life of a predator is hard, sometimes thy are stuck chasing animals to eat for days.
Wolves that live in the northern part of the world, where most do, go through very harsh winters. The temperature can fall all the way down to negative forty five degrees. Wolves curl up during these cold months and usually sleep and hunt only.
