Before the battle of Atlanta the south had been winning most of the battles and was advandcing very quicky into the north. This was a major battle for the north in terms of the future otcome of the war. The south needed to win to prove that they were strong even if they had less, people, money, and resources.
The battle of Atlanta began on July 22nd in east Atlanta. It is know as one of the bloodiest battles of the war resulting in about 3,000 union losses and almost 9,000 confederate losses. Also General James McPherson died in this battle.
Sherman, after winning Atlanta, mandated all of the inhabitants out of the city because he was going to use it as a military post. ''God will judge me in good time, and He will pronounce whether it be more humane to fight with a town full of women and the families of a brave people at our backs, or to remove them in time to places of safety among their own friends.''
Hood, while retreating, burned many armories. Despite this, the northern morale was very high. Northerners were excited about winning a major battle and were now content with President Lincoln, therefore he was re-elected in 1864.
Officer Sherman marched his 100,000 troops to Atlanta to fight General Joseph E. Johnston's 60,000 troops. Soon after arriving President Jefferson Davis was afraid that Johnston would soon get afraid of Sherman and try to retreat, so he replaced him with John Bell Hood. Sherman after a month of fighting finally defeated Hood by cutting off the last railroad in Atlanta. After already loosing 9,000 men he was forced to retreat on September 1st, 1864.
