Storytelling
The Native Americans have a long standing oral tradition. They kept their history alive by telling to storys generation through generation.
Old tradition allowed that the tales and stories were told only to fellow Native Americans.

Those interested in listening to the myth keeper's tales had to go through a long ceremonial process.
The listener had to endure a scratching ceremony in which they are scratched from shoulder to elbow to wrist with a comb made out of rattlesnake teeth.
There are sacred stories which are the serious type of stories which tell about why the Cherokee came to have certain healings, songs and that sort of thing. The second type of stories are the small animal stories. These stories tell why a certain animal looks the way they do, or act they way they do.
