Project Revolution
The Halifax Resolves is a later given name to a resolution adopted by the North Carolina Congress on April 12, 1776. They were part of a movement started to gain public support for a declaration of independence. The reason for this movement was that many members of the Continental Congress were not permitted to take any action towards independence. The Halifax Resolves empowered North Carolina Continental Congress members to join with other members to declare independence from British rule.
The Mecklenburg (or Charlotte Town) Resolves were a series of resolutions adopted on May 31, 1775 by the Mecklenburg Committee of Safety that provided for the following: - All laws originating from the king or Parliament were voided -The actions of royal military and civil officials was suspended -A call was put out to the other colonies to begin governing themselves through provincial congresses -Royal officials who continued in their duties in North Carolina were to be arrested.
The Battle of Alamance ended the War of the Regulation, a rebellion in North Carolina over issues of taxation and local control, and possibly began the American Revolution. However, the rebellion was against the local government and not the British. On May 16, 1771, the miltia troops of Governor William Tryon fought the Regulators, a group of rebels, who outnumbered them 2:1. Despite having greater numbers than Tryon, the Regulators lost and their rebelion failed.
At dawn on February 27, 1776, Highland Scots led by Lt. Colonel McLeod and Captain John Campbell arrived at Moore's Creek Bridge only to find it blocked by Americans led by Colonels Alexander Lillington and Richard Caswell. The Loyalists rushed the bridge only to be met by heavy Patriot fire at point-blank range. The whole Loyalist attacking party was cut down in 3 minutes, and the survivors fled.
