Hot Sheet: Functions of U.S. Government Part II Reading Sources: Course textbook Chapters 16-18, 20-21 Classroom supplementary textbook, “The State We’re in” Vocabulary: reserved powers, concurrent powers, referendum, initiative, recall, political parties, constituents, Full faith and credit clause, political action committees, interest group, public opinion, campaign, public policy Exam Expectations: Identify and explain a state’s reserved and concurrent powers. Describe the main types of state and local governments and their responsibilities (e.g. county, township, etc) Identify and explain the major sources of revenue for state and local governments (e.g. property, income, etc. Analyze the various levels and responsibilities of courts in the state judicial system. Know how public opinion, interest groups, and political action committees influence public policy. Unit Projects A) Vocabulary puzzle. B) Chart- Make a chart of Governmental powers found on page 69 of textbook. C) Write an essay based on the information on the back of this sheet. Attend a court session for one hour at a Michigan district courtroom and write an observation paper of what happened and your reactions. 2. Conduct a political poll (see me for a sheet on this.) 3. With a group of 2-4, play one of Mr. G’s political board games and write a reaction. 4. Make a creative presentation on the history of a current political party.
