Maud Island Frog
The Maud Island Frog is one of New Zealand's four native frogs. It is only found in the Malborough Sounds in New Zealand.
Maud Island Frogs are a very rare and endangered species of frog. They are protected by law and must not be handled or disturbed.
They are not like other frogs ! They chirp instead of croaking. They don't have webbed feet, it doesn't need them as it doesn't live near water. It doesn't go through the tadpole stage like most frogs.
Another thing that is unusual about this frog is that it doesn't catch insects with it's tongue, it pounces on them and crams them into it's mout with its small hands.
The female lays eggs under rocks or logs. The male sits on them until they hatch as little froglets with tails. He then looks after them until they lose their tail.
