This stage is where the character lives an ordinary life not aware of what is to come. For example, Santiago lives a ordinary life in the Village of Cube of the Gulf of Mexico, unaware of what is to come.
Stage One: (innocence)
Old Man and the Sea
In this stage the hero called to adventure; often reluctant to go, but ultimately accepts the challenge. This is where Santiago goes out and tries to become lucky again. He is determined and not going to give up.
Stage Two: Departure
Stage three is when the hero crosses a threshold into a new, more dangerous world. gaining more mature perspective. Like Santiago, he knows that hes going out to far, but doesnt want to give up. He caught a fish that is dragging him north-east. Soon Santiago can not see the lights of Havanna. but that doesnt change his mind of going back. He is not giving up.
Stage Three: Initiation facing the unknown
Stage four is when the hero is given supernatural help, endures test of strength, resourcefulness and endurance. Without the that bird that was circling around the one area, Santiago would have never catch the 1,000 pound marlin. He has held this for over 24 hours with a fishing wire, which is cutting into his hands. He hasn't given up and he's not planning on it.
In stage five descends into a innermost cave, underworld, or some other place of great trial. Because of this trial the character is reborn either phyically or emotionally. Santiago is so lonly out in the middle of the ocean with no one. He considers the marlin his brother. Santiago finally catchs the fish after harpooning it. Santiago feels bad that he had killed the fish, but at the same time he can go back to the village and sell the meat. He has changed dramatically, he has weakended and is ready to go home.
Stage Six is when the hero returns back to society using his/her new wisdom to restore order to the land. As Santiago returns home with his "brother," he realizes that killing the fish was wrong, the fish should live just as much as he does. The smell of blood are caught by shovel-nosed sharks. When stantiago returns home there is nothing left of the marlin, except the skeleton. Santiago was dissopointed but was ready to return home. He meets the boy, who is trying to take care of him, but Santiago ends up dieing.
Stage Six: Return and Reintegration into society
