Sources of Social Change
Population Change in the size of a population my bring changes in the culture.
Wars & Conquest Bring the greatest change in the least amount of time.
Technology
Values & Beliefs Ideology-system of beliefs that justifies the social, moral, religious, or economic intersts held by a group or society.
Diffusion Spreading culture traits from one society to another. More contact with other countries equal more traits being borrowed. We trade objects and technology more freely then ideas and beliefs.
Resistance to Change
Ethnocentrism Change that comes from outside a society. People tend to believe that their own ideas and ways of doing things are best. Extreme ethnocentrism can make cultural borrowing difficult or even impossble.
Vested Interests A person who is satisfied with the way things are now is likely to resist change. Some believe present is better than unknown future. They resist any change that threatens their security or standard of living.
Cultural Lag Not all cultural traits change at the same rate. Some traits change rapidly and the transformation of others may take considerable time. Material culture usually change faster and non material culture lags behind.
Physical Enviroment Natural disasters can produce social and cultual change.
