Pantheon
The Pantheon has inspired libraries, art museum, and universities across our country.
To: Ancient Roman Gods From: Consul Agrippa Dedicated in honor of our victory at Actium in 31 BCE
In the Renessance the Panthenon was used mainly as a burial place.
Among those buried there are the painters Raphael and Annibale Carracci, the composer Arcangelo Corelli, and the architect Baldassare Peruzzi.
The Parthenon is made out of concrete...The Romans were the first to invent concrete!
They had to use less dense concrete for the top of the dome so that it wouldn’t be too heavy. Building a dome of that size that included a skylight was a huge architectural achievement.
Rebuilt by Emperor Hadrian after original building was destroyed by fire.
(interestingly enough today’s building that he made looks nothing like the original but he still shared credit with the first commissioner of the building.)
The 16 massive columns were quarried in Egypt and transported to Rome. The circular opening at the top of the dome is called the oculus, or eye to heaven.
