Atmospheric carbon dioxide has increased by 31% from 1750 to 2002. The important concern is the rate of the increase. 3/4 of the increase has occurred in the last 75 years.
Why is this happening? - The unprecedented rate at which humans are burning coal, oil, & natural gas. Humans are using energy for transportation, electrical energy generation & industrial processes such as the manufacture of steel & cement.
Main natural sinks are: - Absorption of CO2 by the oceans - Photosynthesis by plants & algae Main manmade sinks are: -Landfills - Carbon capture & storage proposals
Increasing CO2 in the Atmopsphere
WHAT IS A CARBON SINK? - A carbon sink is major source or a reservoir of carbon compounds. - a carbon compound includes carbon dioxide in the atmosphere & carbon dioxide dissolved in water.
CO2 use since 1960
