The New Deal is the real deal?
''The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.'' - President Roosevelt during his Inaugural Address regarding the Great Depression.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt became president during the time of the Great Depression; a difficult time when the stock market crashed and people became unemployed with no jobs and money for basic survival. FDR was the flame that rekindled the hope for better times in the United States. He took steps to resurrect the economy and to lift people's souls. He proposed a legislation designed to prevent the collapse of the banking system, to provide jobs and farm subsidies, allow workers to bargain collectively, and guarantee minimum wages. These economic and social reforms were known as the New Deal.
By 1935, the nation had achieved some recovery
but businessmen and bankers disliked the New Deal, and FDR introduced Social Security: heavier taxes on the wealthy, control over the banks, and work relief for the unemployed.
Franklin Roosevelt was the only president to serve 4 terms. During his second term he implemented the Fair Labor Standards Act, creating the minimum wage, in his third during WWII, he signed the U.S to the Allied side, declaring war against Japan. In his 4th term, he was involved in the Yalta Conference before he died.
PEARL HARBOR
In 1941 FDR cut off the sales of oil after Japan occupied China. As Roosevelt negotiated with the Japanese government, he shifted a bomber force to the Phillipines. After finding out about a secret plan involving the invasion of Europe, the Japanese attacked the U.S Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, destroying 16 warships and killing over 2,400 Americans.

Quick Fact
FDR had contracted polio in the 1920s and lost the use of his legs. He became a ''cripled president'' but served as a metaphor for the U.S economic collapse.
