Scientific & Common Name: Syphilis
Cause: Syphilis is caused by Treponema pallidum. It enters the body through the mucous membranes
Symptoms: Syphilis develops in four stages, each with a different set of symptoms. Some include open sores, flu like symptoms, skin rash. Can cause mental illness, blindness, heart disease, and death
Treatment: Syphilis is treated with penicillin, administered by injection. Other antibiotics can be used for patients allergic to penicillin.
Prognosis:The prognosis is good for the early stages of syphilis if the patient is treated promptly. The prognosis for patients with untreated syphilis is spontaneous remission for about 30%; lifelong latency for another 30%; and potentially fatal tertiary forms of the disease in 40%.
