Sonia's Schooling: After high school, she got a full - ride scholarship to Princeton. She felt like, ''...a visitor landing in an alien country.'' She felt different from the other kids. There were few women and even fewer Latinos going to school there. At first, she was scared to ask questions and her writing and vocabulary were weak. But, after long hours in the library, summer school, and tutoring, she graduated with honors. That means she had good grades! She said, ''My time at Princeton was life changing.''
Sonia Sotomayor's early life was that she was raised in the Bronx in New York City. Her father left Puerto Rico during Word War II, so her heritage is Puerto Rican, so she called herself a Nuyorican! She came up with that name because she put New York and Puerto Rico together! She is a fan of the Yankees.
Even though Sonia's dad died, that didn't stop her from going on to be a 111th supreme court justice. She is the second female judge and the first Hispanic judge!
Sonia Sotomayor was born in June 25, 1954. In 1962, when she was 8, she was diagnosed with diabetes. In 1963, when she was 9, her dad died. All of this sadness did not stop her!
When did she know she would be an attorney? She loved Nancy Drew, a girl character in books, who inspired her to go into a legal career. ''I knew I was going to college. I was going to become an attorney (lawyer). I knew that when I was 10 years old. Her mother got an encyclopedia for their house. Having encyclopedias at home meant getting a good education would be easier!
