JUNE 1, 1450
Johnannes Gutenberg invented a type of printer called the printing press. It was created in 1450 in Gutenberg's workshop in Mainz, Germany. The Renaissance was a period of great change in Europe so the printing press was one of the greatest inventions of that time. In 1455 Johnannea Gutenburg published the first printed book. Then a few years later in 1475 he had printed more than 200 copies of the Latin Bible. Before the printing press people had to copy books by hand. It take many months for scribes and books to be copied so this new invintion took alot of stress off peoples hands. The printer workes by pulling the handle of the screw which lowered the spindle which presses the paper firmly onto another page. The paper is then hammered into a soft metal to make a mold. Then they pour ink onto the metal mold, then it is transfered onto other peices of paper then made into many copies. Workers at that time had to work in small workshops that could only hold one to two printing presses.Gutenberg said that the idea of the printing press came to him "like a ray of light." The advantage of the printing press was that it could produce about 16 printed pages an hour.
