We were entranced by the arid path slicing between mountains, soaring on peaks, and sliding down valleys. Every pace, a miniscule proportion towards our 110 mile journey. Temperatures soared as morale weakened. As altitude increased, our shortness of breath became a hindrance. New Mexico; a true place of beauty and cruelty. Many times I questioned my will to continue along that dirt path. Every day was another battle between man and the elements.
Navigating this stunning wilderness was as much as a pleasure as it was a pain. It was difficult to synthesize thoughts and emotions in such a primal state. Living in the mountains for eleven days changes a person no matter who you are. You learn to appreciate friends, family, as well as things most take for granted. Running water, air conditioning, a bed to sleep in, a home, transportation. All of these are nonexistent when one takes a journey such as i did. You learn to respect people your parents and your possessions. I realize now that this wasn't just a backpacking trip for me, it was possibly the largest life changing event I have experienced to this day. As I sit here and reflect on that journey, I recommit these lessons that I shared with you to my memory, because the things one learns when exposed to such a primative state are some of the most important you will ever need to know about yourself.
INTRO: I chose this piece because I believe it is my best personal narrative. I used both creative and figurative language in order to relay emotions I felt to the reader. Scenery also plays a vital role in the relation of emotion and is accented by pictures of the actual trip being described.
