Opinions
Intro I chose this particular piece because It depicts my beliefs when it comes to whether everybody deserves an opinion worthy of credit. This relates to the central theme of 'me' because I know that I would want to have a valued opinion regardless of where I fell in the American caste system.
Everybody has an opinion. Whether it’s a person of great fame and fortune, or an impoverished citizen that is attempting to gain a foothold in society, an individual’s opinion matters. But in conditions where the media is involved, a person’s opinion can falter under many conditions such including nervousness, lack of self confidence, and censorship. That is the difference between a true private opinion, and a manipulated public statement which more often than not, holds little significance. There is a correlation with having a camera or microphone thrust upon an individual and common sway in the opinion that they state. When giving a statement for the media, the ever-lingering fact that potentially hundreds, thousands, or even millions of people will view their statement may cause a last minute revision of their opinion. The pressure behind giving a public statement will cause some to “go mainstream”. Such nervousness is a direct link to a lack of self confidence when sharing views. If the person giving the statement is worrying about what others are going to think rather than what it is he should say to convey their opinion, their true feelings on the matter won’t come out. Instead, a contorted version of their ideals will arise geared toward mass appeal. Another contributing factor in the general triviality of public opinions is censorship. Depending on the type of media censorship can be used as a strict boundary on what views an individual can convey. For example, a television network may only air opinions that coincide with their beliefs. The bias of the media can easily show only their views; which is why sometimes only one side of an issue is discussed while the other is disregarded. All opinions hold value, but when it evolves into the opinion that is going to be shared with the public, a person’s opinion can falter under conditions such as nervousness, lack of self confidence, and censorship. These reasons should be considered when debating whether a person’s opinion has value in the eyes of the interpreter.
