Censorship
INTRO: I chose this piece because it shows my wirting ability under a timed situation. The topic was something close to me due to my cousins active deployment in Afghanistan when this was written.
War is a gruesome thing that can barely be handled in its entirety. Soldiers who undergo months and years of psychological and physical training often cannot endure the stresses of war. The media is in charge of relaying information back to the average American, they need censorship to maintain our country’s vital equilibrium. Journalists who travel abroad to document warfare require courage and determination, yet they often cause great risk for our soldiers on the frontlines as well as the citizens at home. Simply stated, Journalists are a large liability. “From authority’s point of view, the media has become a serious management problem.” (Source E). Source E continues to illustrate a scenario in which soldiers received unnecessary casualties attempting to rescue journalists that were not in harm’s way. Our soldiers dying for the sake of a fancy backdrop in the reporters’ next newscasts is a horrible thing to advocate. Depicted in source B is the message” Loose lips might sink ships”. This cartoon is interpreted as such. If the wartime media isn’t censored, it can cause casualties overseas. “They [the media] shouldn’t, for example, report the weather accurately. ‘weather news might be of great importance to the enemy,’ Mr. Price wrote, ‘word of a storm in the Midwest may enable him to chart weather conditions over the Atlantic three or four days in advance’.” (Source D) If a reporter discusses new military tactics or the location if bases, encampments, or positions, it will inform the enemy which will lead to casualties caused by the media. In contrast, some may say it is our right to know what our soldiers are going through because we care about them. If we truly cared, we wouldn’t want to be the cause of more casualties overseas because of a newscast. Military censorship is necessary for both our soldiers on the war front, as well as those of us fortunate enough to be on the home front.
