Concentration camps
By the late 1930s there were literally hundreds of camps scattered throughout Germany
Some of the concentration camps were death camps in which thousands of inmates died of starvation, being worked to death, exposure to the elements, epidemics and disease, or simply being executed for alleged crimes
Under SS management, the Germans and their collaborators murdered more than three million Jews in the extermination camps alone.
The Nazis constructed gas chambers to increase killing efficiency and to make the process more impersonal for the perpetrators.
