Chapter 3 Review Entertain, Inform, Persuade General Purpose: writers do not directy state their general purpose, readers must use indirect clues to determine it. Identify the general purpose by asking Why did the author write this? or What did the author want to accomplish. Entertain: will tell astory or describe someone or something in an interesting way. Inform: will explain something to the readers or provide them with the knowledge they did not possess before. Persaude: tries to change readers opinions by appealing to their emotions or intellect. To determine whether the author's general purpose is to entertain, inform, or persaude, look for clues in the title, headings, subheadings, and in the introduction or conclusion. Audience; authors take into account those they are writing for when they choose their general purpose. In addition to a general purpose, authors also usually have a specific purpose, which gives more information about the article. Summarizing: stating the main ideas in your own words. When you write summaries you need to present the main ideas in order of importance in an objective fashion.
