When you unexpectedly step on a fire ant mound, protective ants come storming out to attack the intruder who might be coming for the fire ant queen. As they crawl up your shoe, onto and under clothing, the ants begin to bite! It doesn't feel so good either!!!!
When your in the south... for me that's in Arkansas...near the Oklahoma border, you have to be careful of where you step. See, here in zone 7 we have a problem with ants. Not just any ants....! We have FIRE ANTS !!!
I went on a walk with my dogs and a digital camera so I could capture on video what happens when you step on a fire ant mound. Usually you can see the mound because many of them are large and obvious. Some however aren't, especially those that are new to an area.

I purposely moved the dirt on the mound. Watch how fast the ants come out of this mound to defend their queen!
