HPV Vaccines
HPV stands for human papillomavirus and is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. It leads to cervical cancer.
- HPV is preventable by using two effective vaccines: Gardasill and Cervarix - both of these vaccines prevent types 16 and 18 of HPV, which are responsible for 70% of cervical cancer - targeted mainly to young, adolescent girls who are not yet sexually active - together these vaccines have been licensed over 100 countries worldwide
- the HPV vaccines have potential to reduce cervical cancer deaths by 50% over several decades - groups and organizations have begun to test the possibility to have HPV vaccines delivered to low-income countries - middle-income countries have started national or sub-national HPV vaccination programs - the vaccines are effective for 7-8 years minimum
I'm so glad that my school strengthened it's health program so I could have access to this effective vaccine.
HPV prevention strategies differ from HIV prevention strategies.
Magdy Dawood is a Canadian scientist who specializes in molecular epidemiology of HPV in cervical cancer in Manitoba.
