Leisure and the economy In 2001, teens spent $201 BILLION of their own money. Not surprisingly, it was spent on purchases related to leisure activities.
Extracurricular activities: School-sponsored extracurricular activities provide the context for much of their leisure activity. Such activities include athletics, band, language/science clubs.
Mass media -Availability of media in homes was greater than anyone thought -Nearly 70% live in homes with three or more tv's! -The average adolescent spends more than 7 hours a day using one or more media. -Their behavior is linked to their choice of music and/or tv show.
School and work in the Early 20th Century Before 1925, most teenagers entered the workforce. Education laws were passed that required teenagers to stay in school until they were 16 years old. This was also expedited by child labor laws. WW2 caused an expasnion of part-time jobs that many teenagers filled. Most of the jobs were in fast food and retail services.
