The designer of the esky may have intended it to be just a portable cooler, but it features time and again at the centre of incredible tales of ocean survival. On at least five occasions in the past 14 months, fishermen whose boats have sank have survived by clinging to or, in the most recent case, floating in, an esky.Other items used by shipwrecked boatmen to stay afloat included their upturned boats, a rudder, rocks off a nearby island, and even a bunch of bananas. In the most recent story, two Burmese fishermen were rescued on Saturday after surviving almost a month floating in a large esky after their wooden fishing boat sank in the Torres Strait.
