The Black Plague
Medical Changes The Plague lasted from about 1348-1351. It efffect EVERYONE in Europe one way or another. It inspired changes in arts, literature, science, etc. My paper focused mostly on the medicinal reform stimulated by the Plague. The Black Death caused the invention of dissection, anatomy and surgery, the destinction between physicians and surgeons, and the discovery of quarantining people. These things happened at this time for very specific reasons.
Background The main reason why medicine did not advance was the Catholic Church; it forebade people to dissect the human body. The Bible says the human body is a temple and the Church believed to dissect it, even after death, would be like destroying a temple of God. The Church was extremely powerful. It controlled the whole social structure of Medieval Europe. Basically if you were to get excomminicated from the Church your social life would be lost, because people were extremely religious. So for fear of being excomminicated the scientist obeyed the Church's teachings
Lasting impressions The Plague inspired medical reform,. Everything change to medicine that happened as a result of the Plague has lasted throughtout history.
Most people thought plague was sent from God and that the could stop it by finding ways to appease him!
