Fall of the Roman Empire
- Crime rate in larger cities went up. - Lead pipes contaminated the water supply to Roman homes. - The blood and deaths in the colosseum spread disease.. - The people who lived in the streets spread disease (prostitution). - Roughly 32,000 prostitues in Rome alone. - Alcohol use was on the rise, making the public drunk and useless. - Most Romans lived in small dirty, and smelly apartments called Islands. - The higher level Islands were cheaper, dirtier, and considerably unsafe. - Roughly 44,000 Islands existed in Rome alone.
Public Issues
- Farming was done by slave labor on farms called latifundia. - The latifundias were owned by wealthy Romans. - The smaller farms couldn't compete with the low prices the latifundia farms created by using slave labor. - As a result smaller farms went out of buisness. - The unemployed farms just started adding to the crime rate because the had no jobs. - The emporer imported grain to about 100,000 people in Rome. - Inflation hit Rome during the reign of Marcus Aurelius. - Rome had stoped taking over land so the flow of gold into Rome stopped. - The gold they had was being spent on luxury items. - The coins weren,t as valuable, so merchants started to raise prices.
Roman Economy
- The Romans never officialy created a system to elect the emporer the choice was up to the emporer, Senate, Praetorian Guard, and the army. - The Praetorian Guard, and the army eventualy started paying off higher up guards and literaly selling the throne to the person with the most money. - Over a time of 100 years Rome had 37 emporers and 25 were assinated. - Emporers such as Caligula and Nero wasted money on fancy parties. - It is that the introduction of Christianity made Rome into a Pacifist country leaving them open to outside attack. - Due to this the govwernment was constantly spending money on the army to help maintain the borders. - This as a result left little money to spend on maintaining the Roman Empire itself. - Angry citizens eventualy just gave up on their loyalty to Rome. - The military just started paying street thugs and foreing people to defend Rome. - This turned out ot be expensive and unreliable.

- Romans couldn't expand their technology anymore because of all the structures they had. - They had built roads, aqueducs, sewers, and bath houses. - They created the first medicine system for poor people. - The Romans relied on human and animal labor so they couldn't build any more machines.
