The Limbic System
The Limbic System is a set of structures that are involved in many emotions, especially those related to survival. Below and to the side are the structures that make up the Limbic System.
The Amygdala - Formed by two almond shaped neural clusters. Influences both aggression and fear. The amygdala also plays a role in processing emotional memories.
This day will forever be in the minds of Americans. We all have an emotion we feel when reminded of this day.
The Cingulate Gyrus. The cingulate gyrus coordinates sensory input with emotions, shows emotional responses to pain and regulates aggressive behavior
The Fornix The fornix connects the hippocampus to the hypothalamus, like a bridge connects to neighboring cities.
The Hypothalamus The hypothalamus monitors blood chemistry and takes orders from other parts of the brain. The hypothalamus controls the pituitary gland, which influences other glands' release of hormones.
The Hippocampus The hippocampus is involved with memory encoding and storage. It plays a crucial role in forming new memories and connecting emotions and senses to memories.
The Thalamus The thalamus relays sensory information from the body to the cerebral cortex and vice versa. The Thalamus also regulates sleep and wakefulness states.
