The Odyssey Episode Two The Lotus Eaters By Nubby 3/19/09
The lotus flower originated in India and is found in Asia commonly.
EPIC SIMILE: "driving veils of squall moved down like night on land and sea"
THEME: Don't experiment or take unknown substances from people you don't know. This is similar to the modern "Don't take candy from strangers" saying. When Odysseus' men took the lotus flower, they forgot about home and only wanted more lotus.
CONFLICT: "I might have made it safely home, that time, ... the current took me out to sea" This shows conflict between Odysseus and nature, but also between Odysseus and the supernatural gods, who control the weather.
EPITHET : "the native bloom" as the reader assumes the lotus flower to being referred.
CHARACTERIZATION: "the lord of cloud roused in the north a storm" states how Zeus is very powerful.
I believe Odysseus represents an epic hero because he never gives up on his men on their 19-year quest. He faces danger and makes good decisions. He risks his life, and always thinks ahead. He is smart and clever, despite how the gods feel about him or the danger they put him in.
This video is somebody else's take on the "chapter", and happens to be an odd video, but its sums up to the men all forget about home and only want more lotus.

FORSHADOWING: "I might have made it safely home, that time." tells us that he did not make it home that time.
