Merely
Not Living, merely existing. The starving citizens of Africa are not living, merely scraping by on what food they can find. On what shelter they can build. A child in Africa dies every 30 seconds due to malaria. That's two a minute. 120 an hour. 2,880 a day. Need I remind you that malaria is preventable and curable? Malaria is only one among many illnesses that kill because of Africa's poor health care. One dollar can save a child. One dollar will give a child in Africa the medicine to prevent malaria. Yet, they are not living, merely existing. The homeless on the street are not living, merely waiting for our help. But our help never comes. We tend to omit others, even when they are in desperate need of our services. There are plenty who are not living, merely existing. Getting by on the bare minimum. But what do we care? After all, we sent a country into the state of merely existing, some lucky to be even that, because in our opinion, their government wasn't good enough. Sometimes it just takes a war. So there they are, rebuilding they're homes after they were so rudely demolished. Apparently our definition of help is to force others to live our way. It's easy for us to get tired of just living. Living in the sense of having everything we need and more. Being able to enjoy life. And existing in the sense, of being alive. There is still a pulse running. We are indeed living, while others merely exist. We are living because we can go to school, while there are thousands that will never be educated. We are living because we get 3 meals a day, while some never get any. We are living because we can turn up the heat when we're cold, but there is no temperature control on the sun. We are living because we can get get a ride, while some don't have a car or a place to go. I'd like to assume that we all take the time to think about those less fortunate. But I know it is often far from our minds, no matter how hard we may try. And I'd like to remind you, Whether you think about them or not, They are not living, merely existing.
