Thales of Miltus was one of the five important discoverer in Ancient Greece. He discovered that an inscribed angle in a smicircle is a right angle. This discovery enabled him measure the distance for a ship at sea to land which let saliors know how long their voyage would take. An explanation is to the right.
Pythagoras was the second important person in Ancient Greece. He perfected the Pythagrean Theorem which shows that in a right triangle the sum of the square of the right angled sides will always be the square of the long side of the triangle. A video is displayed here.
Plato founded The Academy where the foundation was laid for the Eucild's system that taught that all thinking is logical.
Archimedes was a very important discoverer in Greek mathematics. He created the Archimedes Principle which states that a defining characteristic for each metal is densety, or mass divied by volume not just mass. He also figured out that pie was equal to between 3-1/2 and 3-10/71. Archimedes greatest discovery in his mind though was the discovery of ratio.
Hypatia of Alexandria was the first female mathematician. She is credited with making three major treatises in geometry, algebra, and astronomy. A treatises is a piece of farmal writting normally longer than an essay about a principle in a particular subject.
The discoveries made changed Greeks's lives. Pythagoras's theorem created another subject that could be taught in school so the children who learned this subject were more mathematically advanced than their parents. Archimedes and his discovery of the pie ratio helped with things such as cooking or architecture. Hypatia show the Greeks that women can do more than housework and make their place in society. Finally, plato made an instituion where citizens could be educated so there would be more technological advances in the future.
The discoveries made in Greece effect us today. The Pythagrean Theorem changed geometry as we know it today by creating a whole new field called trigonometry that we use in verually all aspects of our lives today. Archimedes discovery for the number for pie changed our mathematical train of thought in calulation for distances motion, Earth's diameter, and space travel just to name a few. Hypatia set the standard for women in the maths and science and showed that society benefits from women's education. The last person Plato set up an insutution where the Eucild's sytem was later founded. This system changed our mathematical train of thought.
Diophantus of Alexandria made the first algebra book.
