What is it? A teaching tool that is made of many different strategies where students work together to accomplish a common goal.

Why use Cooperative Learning? 5 Elements of Cooperative Learning
4. Interpersonal and Small Group Skills (getting along in the real world) Teach basic social skills, such as communication and conflict management.
5. Group Processing (group evaluation) -What worked? - What didn't work? -What can we change?
2. Face-to-Face Interaction (promote each other's success) Group Discussion Should: -explain solutions -teach new knowledge - check for understanding - point out key concepts -make connections with prior knowledge
3. Individual and Group Accountability (no hitchhikers) Jobs of the Teacher: -keep groups small - test individuals - randomly check student progress for each group - make group observations
1. Positive Interdependence (sink or swim together) Each Person: -must participate -has a specific job
Cooperative learning is based on the learning theories of Lev Vygotsky. He promoted interactional theories of cognitive development. His developmental method emphasizes culture and is based in human activity. He used social origins of thinking. Emphasis on students working within the same group for a long time, but still stresses individual acoountability and achievement.
