The Inca Empire
The Inca Empire had 80 provinces. There were 14,000 miles of roads that went through the Andes Mountains, connecting the empire. Along the roads there were shelters, postal service, and soldiers. The cities had temples, buildings, and plazas.
The Icas wordhipped many spirits of nature, but most of all the sun god, Inti. They sacrificed humans every day so Inti could make the sun rise in the morning. The main language was Quecha, and was spoken by everyone. There were schools to teach Incan ways. The government established Mita, which was where able-bodied citizens had to do community service for a certain number of days. The farmers used techniques such as irrigation and terrace farming.
The temple of the sun was a very important shrine. One of the most wonderful Incan cities was Machu Picchu. It was isolated, hidden deep in the Andes Mountains. Some people think it was a religious center, an estate for the ruler Pachacuti, or even a retreat for Incan rulers and nobility. The Incans also created a calender system that was a lot like the Mayans' and Aztecs'.
But of course, all great empires have to fall. A civil war started up when the last king, Huayna Capac died. His sons divided up the empire. Then the Spanish arrived, and conquered them. Yet the Incas influenced other people, with things like the worship of the sun god, and the calender system.
