dale earnhart was born on april 29th, 1951 in kannapolis, north carolina. he began racing in the late 1970s.
1975 - His first career Winston Cup start came in The World 600. He finished in 22nd place. 1979 - His first career Winston Cup victory came on April 1st at Bristol. In this year he was also named Winston Cup Rookie of the Year. 1980 - During his second full season he won his first Winston Cup Championship. 1986 - Dale won his second Winston Cup Championship. 1987 - He finished first in 11 races. Plus he won his 3rd Winston Cup Championship. 1990 - He won his 4th Winston Cup Championship. 1991 - He won his 5th Winston Cup Championship. 1993 - He won his 6th Winston Cup Championship. 1994 - Dale won his 7th and final Winston Cup Championship. 1997 - This was the first season in 15 years that Dale failed to win a single race. 1998 - In Dale's 20th attempt to win at the Daytona 500, he finally did it! 1999 - At the Coca Cola 600 in Charlotte, Dale Sr. got to race against Dale Jr. for the first time in a Winston Cup Race. 2000 - Dale picked up his last win taking the Winston 500 at Talladega on October 15. 2001 - Made his last Winston Cup start in the Daytona 500. He hit the wall head on and died while running in 3rd place on the last lap coming out of turn 4.
Dale Earnhardt Sr. finally had the stars align in 1998. While the race was a good one the truly memorable moment here was that slow drive up pit road where every team and every member of the press went out to congratulate Dale.
