The Crusades began when a Pope called for soldiers to go and fight for god by capturing the religious city, Jerusalem. The Orthodox Byzantine Empire askes the Pope for help by fighting off the Muslim Seljuk Turks. The Pope saw this as an opportunity to expand his power.
The Crusades began 1096 and ended in 1272. There were 9 crusades in the Middle East.
The Crusades were holy wars fought between Catholics and Muslims.
The Crusades were not successful for the Europeans and left many people questioning the Catholic Church.. Kings had also gained power becuase many of the nobles had been fighting in the Crusades. The religious fervor had been carried into Europe where pagans were pserecuted during the Inquistion.
