Lions inhabit a wide range of habitats from open plains to forest areas. Lions are the most social of the feline species. Lions hunt large mammals such as the zebra and wildebeest. The average lifespan of lions in the wild is 15 years but they may life up to 25 years or beyond in captivity. Lions are Africa's largest carnivore. Female lions give birth to a litter of cubs every 2 years. The gestation period is three and a half months long. A litter may consist of 1 to 5 cubs. The cubs nurse for the first 6 months of their lives. A group of lions is called a pride. Male lions mark their territory with urine as do domestic felines. Female lions do most of the hunting. The hyena is one of the lion's greatest competitors for prey. Throughout the years and even in present day lions face endangerment from hunting and loss of habitat.
