1498-The land around Chesapeake bay is claimed for england. (St.Mary 1608- Jhon Smith of Virgina Explores the bay. 1634- the first coloniests arrive aboard the ark and the dove. (St..Mary.s is established as Maryland's first Capital 1649- the genearal assembly passes the Act of Religious Toleration. 1694- The captial is moved to Annapolis. 1774- marylanders burn the british ship the peggy stewart. 1788- Maryland becomes the seventh state. 1812-1815- the war of 1812 is fought. 1818- the cumberland road to the west opens. 1829- Chesapeake and deleware canal is built. 1838- •Frederick Douglass escaped from slavery in Baltimore. •Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore Railroad Company formed. •Oct. 3 - Governor and State senators first elected by voters rather than by legislature. 1839 - •Mercantile Library Association. •Baltimore City Council established Central High School (later City College). •David Carroll and Horatio Gambrill opened textile mills, Hamden-Woodberry. 1839-1842 - William Grason (Democrat), governor. 1840 - •Washington Temperance Society. •Baltimore Steam Packet Company (Old Bay Line). •Baltimore College of Dental Surgery founded. 1841 - Maryland College of Pharmacy. 1842 - •Slaveholders' convention met at Annapolis. •Baltimore & Ohio Railroad reached Cumberland. 1842-1845 - Francis Thomas (Democrat), governor. 1844 - •Jan - Maryland Historical Society founded. •May 24 - Samuel F.
