Malapropism in Newspaper Headline
I noticed a malapropism in todays newspaper (10/27/09). The article is about football, and the headline is ''No 'Dog daze for UF.'' This is funny, because the saying is 'Dog Days,' but since they are talking about a sport, I guess it deserved a different spelling. You would expect the proper saying, and when you notice this and realize what they are talking about, its pretty humorous.
Hyperbole in advertisement
I found a shampoo advertisement, which said this product will ''add amazing luster for infinite, mirror-like shine.'' This is pretty funny, because no product can do something like that, and its really funny that people would believe that could happen.
Hyperbole in a song
I came across this song while looking for humorous devices in a song. It is called ''America's SuiteHearts,'' and it is a pretty interesting song, talking about fame and how it's addicting (at least that is what I think). The first line is ''You could have knocked me out with a feather.'' I think thats funny, because of the meaning behind the song, talking about addictions to fame, and I think this line means that he is too engrossed in other Hollywood type things, that you could literally knock him out with a feather. I'm not exactly sure on the meaning behind the song, but this is what it sounds like to me, and it's pretty funny, and that sort of thing seems to happen to a lot of Hollywood people.
Poem (hyperbole)
I found this poem, which has several uses of the hyperbole device, and it is quite humorous. It is saying that the person would much rather do almost anything than homework, and the examples are pretty funny. Although I bet if a person did any of these, they would be wishing they were doing homework instead! I'd rather take baths with a man-eating shark, or wrestle a lion alone in the dark, eat spinach and liver, pet ten porcupines, than tackle the homework, my teacher assigns. -Jack Prelutsky
Oxymoron Greeting Card
I found this great Valentines Day greeting card with a picture of an Ox and a heart on it saying ''I'm an Oxymoron.'' On the inside it says ''I hate to love you this much!'' I think this is a genius card; an Ox calling himself an oxy'moron' for liking someone else so much.
Malapropism in comic
I found a comic and it is apparently based on real doctor events. It was a picture of an old lady in her roll-away bed, and the caption underneath said ''Sent to the ER from the Nursing Home because the patient was *acting* lethargic.'' I think this is funny, because a person, especially under the care of professionals, has no need to *act* sick.
Oxymoron poem
This is a great poem that tells a story, with awesome uses of the oxymoron device: A colossal dinghy raises Its feather-light anchor With vicious doves circling In the bright winter sky. I think the way it was written gets you to imagine this scene happening, and it would be entertaining to see!
Free Credit Report Song (hyperbole)
I'm sure you see those commercials with the three guys singing songs about their credit--well, I found a hyperbole in one! In the one commercial where the singer wants to buy a cell phone, he states how they gave him a cell phone like a dinosaur instead of something new - meaning that it's so old, ugly and bulky that it is almost prehistoric. There are a lot of funny things about this commercial, but this part is funny because people actually had phones like that back then! It's also humorous because girls are in the store that I assume he wanted to impress.
Pun in Greeting Card
This is another great greeting card. The picture on the front is of a jellyfish -- except the body of the jellyfish is a jar with jelly in it, and the legs are on the bottom of the jar. This is pretty humorous for obvious reasons, and I think people think of things like that all the time. This card suggests a different meaning to the term 'Jellyfish.'
Comic Pun
This is definitely humorous. This comic shows two people fishing in a large body of water, with different kinds of fish filled to the top of their boat. They just keep catching them, and the reader assumes they have good luck, but then you notice the factory in the background, on an island next to the water they are fishing in, with smoke coming from the factory. Then the reader realizes the fish are already dead from poison, but the people didn't realize it yet. The caption says: ''Does this seem a little too easy?''
