This story is about Ellen Toliver and takes place during the Revolutionary War. Ellen was a little girl who smuggled a loaf of bread with a secret message baked inside it through enemy lines from New York to New Jersey. Her grandfather was supposed to take the message but he couldn't because he sprained his ankle. Ellen took it for him because the future of the American colonies depended on it. The message had important information about what the British were going to do. Ellen lived in New York. She had to cross the Hudson River to the New Jersey side on a ship with British soldiers and then find Mr. Shannon at the Jolly Fox Tavern. She disguised herself by cutting her hair short and dressing like a boy. When Ellen found the Jolly Fox Tavern, she gave the loaf of bread to Mr. Shannon for her grandfather. Mistress and Mr. Shannon sent Ellen home early the next morning with Grimsby and Gallop. When Ellen got home, she told her mother and grandfather about what had happened since she left them. Grandfather was very proud of her. He had wanted to deliver the message in the snuffbox in the loaf of bread himself. But Ellen had done an excellent job and had helped the patriots when he couldn't. At the end of the story, the snuffbox was returned by a secret courier. Inside was a note that said, "For Toliver." There was also a silver locket.
